From Tangier airport to the city centre is about 15 km, a drive of 20 to 30 minutes. Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport (TNG) has no train. Your options are a grand taxi from the official rank, the airport bus to the railway station, or a pre-booked private transfer with a driver waiting at arrivals.

Key facts about Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport

  • Code: TNG. One passenger terminal.
  • Location: Boukhalef, about 15 km south-west of central Tangier.
  • To the medina and Tanger Ville port: around 25 to 30 minutes by car.
  • To Tanger Ville railway station: around 25 minutes by car, about 40 minutes by airport bus.
  • To Tanger Med port: roughly an hour, mostly by motorway.
  • To Chefchaouen: 125 km, 2 h 15.

What arrival at Tangier airport looks like

The terminal is compact. You walk from the aircraft to passport control, then to a single baggage hall, then straight out to the public area. On a quiet day the whole sequence takes 20 to 30 minutes. When two or three flights land together, the passport queue is where the time goes.

In the arrivals hall you will normally find cash machines, exchange counters and car rental desks. Withdraw or change some dirhams here: taxis and the bus are paid in cash, in local currency, and cards are rarely accepted. Keep a second card in reserve in case a machine is out of service.

Tangier airport to city centre by grand taxi

One rule surprises first-time visitors. The small city taxis, the petits taxis, may drop passengers at the airport but are not allowed to pick up there. Departures are handled by grand taxis from a rank outside the terminal, at fares set by the authorities and shown on a board by destination.

At the time of writing, travellers report roughly 100 to 150 MAD for the centre by day, with a higher night rate from late evening to early morning. The fare is per car, not per person. Read the board before you get in, confirm the amount with the driver and have small notes ready. Grand taxis take card payments only in rare cases.

The system works well for couples and solo travellers heading to a hotel on the main boulevards. It is less comfortable with large suitcases, with a group of more than four, or late at night after a delayed flight when the rank is thin.

The airport bus to the railway station

A dedicated airport bus line has linked the terminal with the city since 2024. The fare was a flat 40 MAD at the time of writing, and the run to Tanger Ville railway station takes about 40 minutes. Departures are roughly hourly during the day and do not cover late-night arrivals, so check the current timetable on the day.

The bus is the logical choice if you are continuing by train. From Tanger Ville, the Al Boraq high-speed service reaches Rabat in around 1 h 20 and Casablanca in a little over 2 h. If your hotel is in the medina or the Kasbah, you still need a petit taxi from the station and a short walk at the end.

Reaching the port: Tanger Ville or Tanger Med

Tangier has two ferry ports and they are far apart. Check your ticket before you choose a ride.

  • Tanger Ville is the old port at the foot of the medina. Fast ferries to Tarifa leave from here. It is about 15 km from the airport, 25 to 30 minutes.
  • Tanger Med is the large port on the Strait, some 45 to 50 km east of the city. Ferries to Algeciras and other longer crossings use it. From the airport, allow about an hour by road, more in summer when traffic for the crossing peaks.

Going to the wrong port costs well over an hour. If you are flying in and sailing out on the same day, leave a wide margin: boarding closes early and summer queues are long.

Beyond Tangier: Chefchaouen, Asilah and Tetouan

Many passengers do not stay in Tangier on the first night. Asilah, the whitewashed fishing town to the south, is about 35 km from the airport and can be reached without crossing the city. Tetouan is roughly an hour to the east.

Chefchaouen is the most common onward trip: 125 km and 2 h 15 into the Rif mountains. No bus leaves from the airport, so public transport means a taxi into Tangier first, then a coach. A private transfer from Tangier Airport to Chefchaouen costs €90 per sedan, €105 per minivan and €150 per minibus, one way, tolls and luggage included. All the options are compared in our guide to getting from Tangier to Chefchaouen.

When to pre-book a private transfer

For a simple daytime ride to a central hotel, the taxi rank does the job and there is no reason to pay more. A booked car earns its place in four situations:

  • you land late at night or on a flight that is often delayed,
  • you are a family or a group of five or more with luggage,
  • you are going straight to Chefchaouen, Asilah, Tetouan or Tanger Med,
  • you want the price settled in euros before you fly.

Our driver waits at the arrivals exit with a name sign, and you receive his name and number on WhatsApp before pickup. Flights are tracked and waiting after a delay is free. The price is fixed per vehicle and is the same day and night. You pay the driver on arrival in EUR, MAD, GBP or USD, with nothing in advance. Child seats are free on request.
