The drive from Marrakech to Imlil

Imlil lies 70 km south of Marrakech and the drive takes about 1 h 30. The road leaves the city across the Haouz plain to Tahannaout, then follows the valley to Asni, where a weekly market fills the roadside on Saturdays. From Asni a narrower mountain road climbs for the last 17 km beside the river, through walnut and apple orchards, to Imlil at about 1,740 m. The final section is winding but fully surfaced. After heavy rain or snow the driver slows down, so allow a little extra time in winter.

Where the car stops in Imlil

The road ends in the village. Your driver drops you at the central car park or at the door of any guesthouse that can be reached by car. Many lodges sit higher up, in Aroumd, Tamatert or above the village, and are reached on foot by mule tracks: there, mules carry the bags and your host sends someone to meet you. Tell us the name of your guesthouse when you book so we can agree the exact meeting point. For the way back, the driver waits at the same car park. Pickup in Marrakech is at the arrivals exit of Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) or at your hotel.

Timing for Toubkal treks and return flights

Imlil is the starting point for Mount Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest peak in North Africa. Trekkers who walk to the refuge the same day should leave Marrakech by 8:00. Coming down, book the pickup with a margin: descents often run late. For a flight from Marrakech, leave Imlil at least 4 hours before departure.
