The drive from Marrakech to Ouzoud

Ouzoud lies 160 km north-east of Marrakech, in Azilal province, and the drive takes about 2 h 45. The road heads out across the Haouz plain through Tamelelt and Attaouia, past olive groves and wheat fields, then climbs into the first hills of the Atlas. The last half hour is a quieter country road with bends, through red earth and almond trees, down to the village above the falls. There is no train and no direct tourist bus, so most visitors come by car. The road is surfaced throughout and open all year.

Where you are dropped and how you reach the water

Cars stop at the car park at the top of Ouzoud village. From there it is a few minutes on foot to the upper viewpoints, where the river drops about 110 m in three tiers. A stepped path lined with cafés leads down to the pool at the base in around 20 minutes. The way back up is steep, so keep time and water for it. If you are staying overnight, the driver takes you to any guesthouse reachable by road. Pickup in Marrakech is at the arrivals exit of Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) or at your hotel or riad.

Timing, stops and the return

Leave Marrakech by 8:00 to reach the falls before the midday coach groups. Plan 3 hours on site: the walk down, lunch on a terrace and the path through the olive trees, where Barbary macaques are often seen. Do not feed them. Flow is strongest in spring. For a same-day return the driver waits at the car park. For a flight home, leave Ouzoud at least 6 hours before departure.
