The drive across the High Atlas

Aït Ben Haddou is 180 km from Marrakech and the drive takes about 3 h 30. The N9 leaves the Haouz plain, climbs through Aït Ourir and Taddert and crosses the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m). On the southern side the slopes turn bare and ochre. About 20 km before Ouarzazate, a signed side road turns north and follows the Ounila valley for the last 9 km to the village. A slower variant leaves the N9 just after the pass and runs through Telouet and the upper Ounila valley. It adds roughly an hour, so request it when you book. In winter, snow can close the pass for a few hours.

Where the car stops and how you reach the ksar

The ksar, a fortified earthen village listed by UNESCO since 1987, stands on the far bank of the Ounila river and is closed to vehicles. Your driver drops you in the modern village on the near bank, at your guesthouse door or at the car park by the restaurants. From there you cross on foot by the footbridge, or over the stepping stones when the water is low, and climb the lanes to the old granary at the top in about 20 minutes. Guesthouses inside the ksar send someone to carry bags across. Pickup in Marrakech is at the arrivals exit of Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) or at your hotel.

Day trip timing and stops

As a day trip this means about 7 hours on the road, so leave Marrakech by 7:00 and plan 2 hours at the ksar. Short stops at Taddert and at the pass are free.
