Ouzoud waterfalls from Marrakech: distance, timing and tips
The Ouzoud waterfalls are 160 km north-east of Marrakech, about 2 h 45 by road each way. Seeing the Ouzoud waterfalls from Marrakech is therefore a full day: around five and a half hours in a vehicle plus three to four hours at the falls, which drop about 110 m in three tiers. Leave by 8:00 and you are back around 17:30. A private car costs €80 one way for up to three passengers; group tours cost less per person and public transport is too slow for a comfortable day trip.
How far are the Ouzoud waterfalls from Marrakech?
Ouzoud lies in Azilal province, where the El Abid river system cuts a red gorge on the edge of the Atlas. The road from Marrakech crosses the Haouz plain to the east, then climbs through olive country and low hills. It is paved throughout and has no high pass, so it stays open all year. The last section is winding, and travellers prone to car sickness should sit in front.

How to get to Ouzoud: the options compared
| Option | Travel time each way | Strengths | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bus to Azilal, then grand taxi | Typically 4 h or more | Cheapest; fine if you sleep in Ouzoud | Change in Azilal, waits at each end; unrealistic as a day trip |
| Group day tour | 3 h to 3 h 30 with hotel pickups | Low price, nothing to organise | Fixed schedule, full minibus, arrival with the midday crowd |
| Rental car | About 2 h 45 | Total freedom | Five and a half hours at the wheel in one day |
| Private driver | About 2 h 45 | Your departure time, your stops, rest on the way back | Higher cost for one or two travellers |
Public transport
There is no direct scheduled coach from Marrakech to the falls that we can confirm at the time of writing. The usual route is a bus from Marrakech to Azilal, then a shared grand taxi for the last stretch to Ouzoud. It works, and it is how many backpackers arrive. But with a change and two waits, you spend most of the day travelling. Choose it only if you plan a night in the village.
Group tour
This is the most popular way to go and the cheapest that fits in a day. Minibuses collect from hotels early, stop once for coffee, and arrive around 11:00, when every other minibus arrives. A local guide usually leads the whole group round the same loop. If you are happy to follow a programme, it does the job.
Private driver
A private transfer from Marrakech to Ouzoud Falls costs €80 in a sedan (1-3 passengers), €95 in a minivan (4-6) and €140 in a minibus (7-14), per vehicle and one way, from the airport or any hotel or riad. The return costs the same. The benefit is control of the clock: leave at 7:30, reach the falls before the tour buses, and head home when you have had enough. For four to six people sharing a minivan, the difference with tour tickets shrinks. Our guide to choosing a private driver or a group tour for day trips works through the numbers and the trade-offs.
What to do at the Ouzoud falls
You arrive at the top, in the village, above the lip of the falls. Old water mills still stand beside the channels here. The name Ouzoud is linked to the Amazigh word for grinding grain.
- Walk the loop: go down one side and come up the other. One bank has steps lined with stalls and café terraces, 15 to 20 minutes to the bottom. The opposite bank is a dirt path through olive groves, quieter and with the best full-height views. Allow 1 h to 1 h 30 without stops.
- Take a raft: at the base, decorated rafts carry you towards the spray for a small fee. Agree the price before boarding. You will get wet.
- Swim: people bathe in the pools downstream of the main basin in warm months. The water is cold. Stay away from the foot of the falls.
- Watch the macaques: Barbary macaques live in the olive trees along the path. Do not feed them and keep bags closed. They take food from hands and pockets.
- Eat: terrace restaurants on the steps serve tagine and grilled meat with a view. Ask the price first.
Men at the car park will offer to guide you. The paths are obvious and a guide is not necessary. If you want one for the olive groves and the quieter viewpoints, fix the price at the start. The steps are steep and many: this is not an easy visit for pushchairs or weak knees.
A realistic timetable for the day
- 8:00: leave Marrakech.
- 9:30: coffee stop on the road.
- 10:45: arrive at Ouzoud, start with the quiet bank.
- 12:45: lunch on a terrace facing the falls.
- 14:30: leave Ouzoud.
- 17:15: back in Marrakech.
With a private car you can ask about a detour to Imi n'Ifri, the natural rock bridge near Demnate. It adds roughly an hour to the day, so decide before you leave rather than on the road.
Best time to visit, and what to bring
March to May brings the strongest flow and green hillsides. Summer is hot on the road but pleasant in the gorge, and it is the season for swimming; weekends in July and August are crowded with Moroccan families. In autumn the flow is lower. After heavy rain the water runs brown for a day or two. In the afternoon, when the sun reaches the gorge, a rainbow often forms in the spray.
Bring shoes with grip, a towel and swimwear in warm months, a light waterproof for the raft, sun protection and small notes in dirhams. Card payment is rare in the village.
Is Ouzoud worth the drive?
Yes, if you have at least four days in Marrakech and do not mind a long day in a vehicle. These are the tallest falls most visitors will see in Morocco, and the gorge has real scale. If your stay is short, or you travel with small children who dislike long drives, the Ourika Valley day trip gives you a river and a waterfall for less than half the driving.
