The best day trips from Marrakech by car, ranked by driving time
The best day trips from Marrakech by car are, in order of driving time: the Ourika Valley (60 km, 1 h 15), Imlil (70 km, 1 h 30), the Ouzoud waterfalls (160 km, 2 h 45) and Aït Ben Haddou (180 km, 3 h 30). The first two are half-day or relaxed full-day trips. The last two need an early start and 10 to 12 hours door to door.
Which day trips from Marrakech are closest by car?
Driving time decides how much of the day you spend on your feet instead of on a seat. As a rule of thumb, a day trip stays comfortable while the return drive is under half of the total outing. The table uses one-way figures from Marrakech, from the airport or from any hotel or riad.
| Destination | Distance | Drive one way | Time on site | Best season | Sedan, one way |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ourika Valley | 60 km | 1 h 15 | 3-4 h | March to June, September to November | €40 |
| Imlil | 70 km | 1 h 30 | 3-5 h | All year, snow possible in winter | €45 |
| Ouzoud Falls | 160 km | 2 h 45 | 3-4 h | March to June | €80 |
| Aït Ben Haddou | 180 km | 3 h 30 | 2-3 h | October to May | €100 |
Prices are fixed per vehicle, not per person, and the return leg costs the same as the outbound one. A minivan for 4-6 passengers and a minibus for 7-14 are available on every route.
1. Ourika Valley: 1 h 15, the easy half day
The road leaves Marrakech to the south-east and follows the Ourika river into the foothills. It ends at Setti Fatma, a village at around 1,500 m where a path climbs to a series of waterfalls. The first one is a 20 to 30 minute walk over rocks: wear shoes with grip. Lunch is served at tables set beside the river, sometimes in it.
Ourika is the shortest mountain escape and the busiest, especially on Sundays and in July and August when Marrakech families come up for the cool air. Go on a weekday and leave by 9:00. Details on the walk and the stops are in our Ourika Valley day trip guide, and the car is our private transfer from Marrakech to the Ourika Valley.
2. Imlil: 1 h 30, the real High Atlas
Imlil sits at 1,740 m at the foot of Jebel Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest summit in North Africa. The road runs through Tahanaout and Asni, then climbs a narrow valley of walnut trees. From the village, a walk of about an hour on mule tracks takes you up to Armed, with views of the summits. Local mountain guides can be hired in the village for longer walks.
Imlil is quieter than Ourika and feels higher and wilder. It suits walkers and anyone who wants mountain air without a long drive. Read the Imlil day trip guide for the walks, then see the Marrakech to Imlil transfer for the car.
3. Ouzoud waterfalls: 2 h 45, a full day north-east
Ouzoud is the only trip here that heads away from the Toubkal massif, across the plain towards Azilal. The falls drop about 110 m in several tiers into a red-rock gorge. A stepped path leads to the bottom in around 20 minutes, small boats cross the pool, and Barbary macaques live in the olive trees along the way. Do not feed them.
The water is strongest in spring. By late summer the flow is thinner but the gorge is still worth the walk. Count 5 h 30 of driving for the day, so leave by 8:00. Timing tips are in Ouzoud waterfalls from Marrakech, and the private car to Ouzoud Falls costs €80 each way in a sedan.
4. Aït Ben Haddou: 3 h 30, the long one
The UNESCO-listed ksar of Aït Ben Haddou lies beyond the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m), on the desert side of the Atlas. It is the most spectacular of the four and the hardest to fit into a day: seven hours of driving for two to three hours on site. Leave at 7:00 and it works. Leave at 9:00 and you arrive in the midday heat with the tour buses.
We explain honestly who should do it in a day and who should stay overnight in Aït Ben Haddou day trip from Marrakech. The transfer to Aït Ben Haddou is €100 each way in a sedan.
What about Agafay and Essaouira?
Two popular outings sit outside the Atlas. The Agafay desert is a stony plateau 35 km from Marrakech, about 50 minutes away, best visited in the late afternoon for sunset and dinner. Essaouira, on the Atlantic coast, is 190 km and 2 h 45 away on a flat, easy road: a long day, but far less tiring than the mountain pass to Aït Ben Haddou.
How should you travel: rental car, tour or private driver?
- Rental car. Good value for confident drivers staying several days. Mountain roads are narrow, and parking near a medina riad is rarely simple.
- Group tour. The cheapest way for one or two people. You follow a fixed timetable with hotel pickups and scheduled shop stops.
- Grand taxi. Shared taxis run to Ourika and Asni from the south side of Marrakech. Cheap, but you wait until six seats are filled and connections onward take time.
- Private driver. A fixed price per vehicle, your own departure time and free short stops. It pays off from two or three travellers upwards.
The trade-offs are compared in private driver or group tour. All mountain routes are listed on our Atlas day trips page.
