Imlil day trip from Marrakech: how to get there and what to do
An Imlil day trip from Marrakech is easy to do in one day: the village is 70 km south of the city, about 1 h 30 by road, at 1,740 m in the High Atlas. Leave by 8:30, allow four to five hours on site for a walk and lunch, and you are back in Marrakech before dinner. You can go by shared grand taxi, group tour, rental car or private driver, and a private car costs €45 each way for up to three passengers.
Where Imlil is and why people go
Imlil sits at the head of the Aït Mizane valley, where the tarmac ends below Jebel Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest peak in North Africa. It is the main trailhead for the Toubkal trek, but you do not need to be a trekker to enjoy it. The appeal for a day visitor is simple: cooler air, walnut and apple terraces, stone villages and mule paths that start from the main street.
The village itself is small. One road, a handful of cafés, gear shops and guesthouses with roof terraces. Expect it to be noticeably cooler than Marrakech in every season, and cold from November to March.
How to get from Marrakech to Imlil
The road leaves Marrakech to the south, crosses the plain to Tahannaout, climbs through the Moulay Brahim gorge to Asni, then follows the valley for the last 17 km to Imlil. It is paved all the way. The final stretch is narrow, with bends and occasional rockfall after heavy rain.
| Option | Typical time | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared grand taxi | 2 h or more, with a change at Asni on most runs | Solo travellers on a budget | Leaves only when full; few cars back after late afternoon |
| Group day tour | Full day, fixed programme | Travellers who want everything organised | Set stops, limited time in Imlil itself |
| Rental car | About 1 h 30 | Confident drivers | Narrow last section, limited paid parking in the village |
| Private driver | About 1 h 30, door to door | Families, groups, tight schedules | Costs more than a shared taxi if you travel alone |
Shared grand taxi
Shared taxis for Asni and Imlil typically leave from the rank near Bab er Robb, on the southern edge of the medina. You pay per seat and the car leaves when all six seats are sold, so the departure time is not in your hands. Many cars stop at Asni, where you change to a second taxi or a minibus for the valley. It is the cheapest way to go and perfectly workable in the morning. The weak point is the return: taxis thin out from mid-afternoon, so do not leave it late.
Group tour
Group tours usually combine Imlil with other stops, such as an argan cooperative, a short camel ride on the plain and lunch in a family house. That suits you if you want a sampler. It suits you less if your goal is a proper walk, because the time in the valley is fixed by the group.
Private driver
A private transfer from Marrakech to Imlil costs €45 in a sedan (1-3 passengers), €55 in a minivan (4-6) and €85 in a minibus (7-14), per vehicle and one way, from the airport or from any hotel or riad in Marrakech. The return costs the same. You choose the departure time, short stops on the way are free, and you pay the driver in cash on arrival. For two people or more, the gap with other options narrows quickly. If you are weighing the two formats, our comparison of a private driver or a group tour for day trips goes into detail.
What to do in Imlil in one day
Pick one walk and do it well. All of these start from the village centre.
- Imlil waterfall: 20 to 30 minutes on foot from the centre, mostly gentle. Small, shaded, good with children.
- Aroumd (Armed): a stone village on a moraine above the valley, about 45 minutes up by mule path. Wide views of the Toubkal massif. Return by the riverbed track to make a loop of roughly two hours.
- Tizi n'Tamatert pass (2,279 m): a steady climb east of Imlil, 1 h 30 to 2 h up, with views into the Imenane valley. A solid half-day outing.
- Sidi Chamharouch (about 2,350 m): the white-rock shrine on the Toubkal trail, 2 h to 2 h 30 each way. At the time of writing, the checkpoints beyond Aroumd ask for your passport and a licensed local guide, so arrange one in the village first.
Lunch is tagine or omelette on a guesthouse terrace. Order when you set off and it will be ready when you return. If your real target is the summit rather than a day out, read our guide to getting to Toubkal and the trailhead logistics.
A realistic timetable
- 8:30: leave Marrakech.
- 9:15: optional stop in Asni. The weekly souk is on Saturday.
- 10:00: arrive in Imlil, tea, start walking.
- 13:30: lunch on a terrace.
- 15:00 to 15:30: leave Imlil.
- 17:00: back in Marrakech.
In winter, leave Imlil by 15:00. The valley loses the sun early and the road is easier in daylight.
When to go and what to bring
April to June and September to October give the most comfortable walking. July and August are hot in Marrakech but pleasant at 1,740 m, which is exactly why locals come up at weekends. From December to March expect snow on the peaks and sometimes in the village; our note on Atlas roads in winter explains what that means for driving.
Bring closed shoes with grip, a warm layer even in summer, sun protection, water and cash in dirhams. Do not count on finding a working cash machine in Imlil. Carry your passport if you plan to walk towards Sidi Chamharouch.
When your date is fixed, book your driver online and confirm the return time on WhatsApp.
