To get to Toubkal from Marrakech you travel by road to Imlil, the trailhead village 70 km south of the city, about 1 h 30 away at 1,740 m. No road goes higher: from Imlil you walk five to six hours to the refuges at 3,207 m, then three to four hours more to the summit of Jebel Toubkal (4,167 m). Leave Marrakech by 7:30 on day one, and book your return pickup for late afternoon on summit day or, better, the next morning.

Where the Toubkal trek actually starts

Every standard route to the summit starts in Imlil, at the head of the Aït Mizane valley. The tarmac ends in the village. Vehicles drop you in the centre, near the car park and the guides' office, and from there everything moves on foot or by mule.

Some guesthouses sit above the village, in Aroumd (Armed) or on the slopes around the kasbah. They are reached by a rough track or a mule path, not by a transfer car. Ask your host where to be dropped and whether a mule will meet you for the bags.

Key facts

  • Marrakech to Imlil: 70 km, about 1 h 30 by road.

  • Toubkal refuges: 3,207 m, five to six hours on foot from Imlil.

How to get from Marrakech to the trailhead

Shared grand taxi

Shared taxis typically leave from the rank near Bab er Robb, south of the medina, for Asni, where most passengers change for Imlil. You pay per seat and wait until the car is full. It is the cheapest option and many independent trekkers use it. The limits are real, though: the departure time is uncertain, rucksacks travel on laps or in a tight boot, and after the descent you may wait a long time for a car to fill.

Transport bundled with a trek package

Most agencies and guides in Imlil sell the trek with transport from Marrakech included. That is convenient. Check what you are getting: a private car or a shared minibus that collects from several hotels, and at what time it returns. A shared pickup can add an hour at each end.

Private transfer

A private transfer from Marrakech to Imlil costs €45 in a sedan (1-3 passengers, 3 suitcases), €55 in a minivan (4-6) and €85 in a minibus (7-14), per vehicle and one way. The price is the same from Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) or from any hotel or riad, and the same for the return. For a group of trekkers with duffel bags, the minivan or minibus is the practical choice. You pay the driver in cash on arrival, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup, which helps when the weather changes your plan.

What time to leave Marrakech

For the classic two-day ascent, leave between 7:00 and 7:30. You reach Imlil around 9:00, meet your guide, load the mule and start walking by 9:30. That puts you at the refuge by mid-afternoon with time to rest and eat before a pre-dawn start.

WhenWhat happens
Day 1, 7:00-7:30Pickup in Marrakech
Day 1, 9:00Arrive in Imlil, meet guide and muleteer
Day 1, 9:30 to 15:30Walk to the refuges via Aroumd and Sidi Chamharouch
Day 2, 4:30-5:30Leave the refuge for the summit
Day 2, 8:30-9:30Summit, then descend to the refuge for a meal
Day 2, 15:30-17:00Back in Imlil

If you land in Marrakech before early afternoon, consider driving straight from the airport to Imlil and sleeping there. A night at 1,740 m is a small but useful step towards 4,167 m, and you start fresh instead of after a pre-dawn alarm in the city. You can see the village and its short walks in our guide to an Imlil day trip from Marrakech.

Guide, checkpoint and passport

At the time of writing, a licensed local guide is required on the Toubkal trail and police checkpoints beyond Aroumd record passports. Carry the original passport in your daypack, not in the bag on the mule. Rules like this can change, so confirm with your guide or guesthouse a few days before you travel.

Refuge places should be reserved ahead in spring, summer and around holidays. Your guide normally handles the booking, the mule and the cook.

Luggage, cash and what the driver can carry

  • Suitcases: leave them at your Marrakech hotel or your Imlil guesthouse. Mules carry soft bags, not hard cases.
  • Cash: bring dirhams from Marrakech for the guide, mule, refuge extras and tips. Do not rely on a cash machine in Imlil.
  • Stops: short stops on the way are free. Asni is the last easy place for water, fruit and snacks.
  • Gear hire: shops in Imlil rent crampons, ice axes, poles and sleeping bags. Allow 30 minutes for fitting.

Timing the pickup after the summit

This is where most plans go wrong. The descent from the summit to Imlil is long, and knees slow down after Sidi Chamharouch. Groups reach the village anywhere between 15:30 and 17:30.

  • Pickup the same day: book it for 17:00 and tell the dispatcher on WhatsApp if you are running late. You are in Marrakech around 18:30.
  • Pickup the next morning: the calmer choice. Sleep in Imlil, leave after breakfast.
  • Flight the same evening: avoid it. A slow descent or bad weather on the mountain leaves no margin.

Season and road conditions

May to October is the main season. From roughly November to April the upper mountain is under snow and the ascent becomes a winter climb with crampons and ice axe. The road to Imlil stays open most of the time, but snow or rockfall can slow the last 17 km above Asni. Read our guide to the Atlas Mountains in winter and their road conditions before a cold-season trip.

Once your trek dates are confirmed, reserve both transfers in one booking, with the return time you agreed with your guide.
