Tangier Airport to Chefchaouen Private Transfer

The drive through the Rif

Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport (TNG) is about 12 km south-west of Tangier. The car heads east without crossing the city centre, towards Tetouan, then turns south on the N2 into the Rif. From there the road is a single carriageway that winds along green valleys, past cork oaks, olive terraces and small roadside markets, and climbs to Chefchaouen at about 600 m. The distance is 125 km and the drive takes about 2 h 15. There is no train to Chefchaouen and no direct bus from the airport. The last hour has many bends, so tell the driver if you want a slower pace.

Where the car stops in Chefchaouen

The old town is pedestrian: its lanes are narrow, steep and stepped. Your driver drops you at the closest point a car can reach. For most riads this is Bab el-Ain, the main gate on the lower side, a few minutes on foot below Plaza Uta el-Hammam. For addresses in the upper medina, the car park at Plaza el-Makhzen, beside the kasbah, is closer. Hotels in the new town and on the hillside roads have door access. Send us the name of your accommodation: many riads send someone to the gate to guide you and help with bags. At the airport, the driver waits at the arrivals exit with a name sign.

Stops, light and the return to Tangier

Short stops are free: a coffee near Tetouan and a viewpoint over the valley before the final climb are the usual two. If you arrive on an afternoon flight, you reach Chefchaouen in soft evening light, when the day visitors have left. For a flight from Tangier, leave Chefchaouen at least 5 hours before departure.
