The drive from Fes Saïss Airport

Fes Saïss Airport (FEZ) lies on the Saïss plain, 15 km south of the city. The drive to the medina takes about 25 minutes. The car follows the main avenue north into the Ville Nouvelle, then skirts the walls of Fes el-Jdid, the royal quarter, to reach the old city. Traffic is light except in the early evening around the new town. Evening arrivals are common at this airport. The price is the same at night and the driver tracks your flight.

Which gate: where the car stops

Fes el-Bali, the old medina, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world. No vehicle goes to a riad door. The driver takes you to the gate closest to your address. Bab Boujloud, the Blue Gate, serves the western end and the two main lanes, Talaa Kebira and Talaa Sghira. Bab Rcif serves the lower centre, near the Qarawiyyin mosque and the tanneries. Batha square, the Aïn Azliten car park, Bab Guissa to the north and Bab Ziat to the south cover the rest. Ask your riad which gate to use and send us its name and phone number: the driver calls ahead so that someone meets you at the car. Porters with handcarts wait at the main gates. Agree the price before they load.

Tips for arrival and the return to the airport

Expect a walk of 3 to 15 minutes from the gate, often on sloping, cobbled lanes. Soft bags are easier than large hard cases.
