How early should you get to Marrakech airport for your flight home?

For how early to arrive at Marrakech airport, plan to be at the terminal 3 hours before an international flight, or 2 hours at the very least if you travel with hand luggage only outside peak periods. Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is only 6 km and about 15 minutes from the medina, but the queues inside are slower than the drive. From a medina riad, that means walking out of the door around 3 h 30 before take-off.

Why does Marrakech airport need three hours?

The terminal is modern and compact, but every departing passenger passes several checks in a row, and flights to Europe leave in waves. When four or five aircraft are due out within the same hour, each line grows at once. On a quiet weekday you can be at the gate 45 minutes after stepping out of the car. On a Sunday in the school holidays the same walk can take two hours.

The steps, in order:

  1. Terminal entrance. Staff may ask to see your passport and booking at the door, and bags can be scanned before you reach the hall.
  2. Check-in or bag drop. Desks typically close 40 to 60 minutes before departure, depending on the airline. Some low-cost carriers ask passengers leaving Morocco to collect a paper boarding pass or a document check at the desk even after checking in online. Read your airline's email before you travel.
  3. Passport control. Usually the longest queue. Each passport is stamped individually.
  4. Security screening. Liquids and electronics rules apply as in Europe.
  5. The gate. Boarding often closes 30 minutes before take-off, and some gates involve a bus to the aircraft.

When are the queues longest?

  • Early morning. The first wave of departures means the hall fills well before sunrise.
  • Late morning to mid afternoon. Aircraft that arrived from Europe in the morning turn around and leave together.
  • Weekends and holidays. Sundays, Easter, half terms, Christmas and New Year, and the weeks around Moroccan public holidays.

Late evening flights are generally calmer. If your flight falls in one of the busy windows, keep the full three hours. If you have no hold luggage, a mobile boarding pass your airline accepts in Morocco, and a midweek evening flight, two hours is normally enough.

What time should you leave your accommodation?

Work backwards from the three-hour mark, then add the drive and the time it takes to reach the car. In the medina that last part matters: cars cannot reach most riad doors, so you walk to the nearest gate with your bags first. Our guide to how cars reach riads in the Marrakech medina shows the usual pickup points.

Add 15 minutes between 17:00 and 19:30, when the avenues around Bab Doukkala, Bab Jdid and the Menara road slow down. On Friday around midday prayer, traffic near the Koutoubia can also stall for a short while. A worked example: for a 14:00 flight from a riad near Bab Doukkala, be at the gate of the medina with your bags at 10:30.

How to get to the airport: bus, taxi or booked car

Bus 19 runs between Jemaa el-Fna, Gueliz and the airport during the day and evening. It is the cheapest way out and fine with a small bag, but it follows a loop and you depend on its timetable, so it suits travellers with time in hand, not those cutting it close. It does not serve early morning departures.

A street taxi is easy to find in Gueliz by day. Before 06:00 it is another matter, particularly inside the medina where no taxi passes your door. Ask your riad to order one the evening before and agree the fare in advance. Typical amounts are covered in our article on taxi fares to and from Marrakech airport.

A pre-booked private transfer removes the timing risk. The return costs the same as the arrival: €15 for a sedan, €20 for a minivan and €35 for a minibus from the medina, at any hour. The driver's name and number arrive on WhatsApp beforehand, 15 minutes of waiting at your hotel are included, and you pay him in cash on the day. Details are on the page for a private transfer between Marrakech Airport and the medina. For a 06:00 flight, a 02:30 pickup is normal and costs no more.

Before you leave the riad: a short checklist

  • Check in online the day before and see whether your airline wants a printed boarding pass in Morocco.
  • Settle the riad bill and the tourist tax the night before. Reception may be closed at dawn.
  • Ask for a porter with a handcart if your riad is deep in the medina. It is quicker than dragging cases over cobbles.
  • Spend or change your dirhams before passport control. The dirham is not freely traded abroad and choice is limited once you are airside.
  • Keep passport and boarding pass in your hand from the terminal door onwards.
