Marrakech Airport Taxi Prices: Official Fares and What Travellers Really Pay
The Marrakech airport taxi price to the medina, Gueliz or Hivernage is regulated and posted on a board at the rank: published figures have ranged from about 70 to 150 MAD by day, depending on the vehicle, and more at night. In practice many visitors are quoted 150 to 300 MAD for the same 5 to 6 km ride. Read the board, agree the total before you get in and pay in dirhams.
What is the official Marrakech airport taxi price?
Taxis that wait at Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) do not run on the meter. They work with a fixed tariff per destination, set by the local authorities and shown on a panel beside the rank on the forecourt. The panel lists the main zones: medina, Gueliz, Hivernage, Palmeraie and a few others.
The tariff is revised from time to time, and travel sites quote different numbers because they copy each other. At the time of writing, the figures most often reported for the central districts sit between 70 and 100 MAD for a petit taxi by day and between 100 and 150 MAD for a grand taxi. At around 10 to 11 dirhams to the euro, that is roughly €7 to €14. Treat these as orders of magnitude. The board in front of you is the only reference that counts.
Petit taxi or grand taxi: why the fare differs
| Petit taxi | Grand taxi | |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle | Small beige city car | Larger saloon or people carrier |
| Passengers | 3 maximum | Up to 6 |
| Luggage | Small boot, sometimes a roof rack | More room for suitcases |
| Area | Inside the city only | City and out of town |
| Airport fare | Lower posted tariff | Higher posted tariff |
The price is per vehicle, not per person. A petit taxi cannot legally take a fourth passenger, so a family of four needs a grand taxi or two small ones. Drivers allocate cars at the rank in turn, so you may be directed to a grand taxi even when you are two. Ask which tariff applies before the bags go in.
Is the fare higher at night?
Yes. Moroccan taxis apply a night supplement, typically around 50% on top of the day rate, and the airport board shows a separate night column. The evening threshold varies with the season, so check the hours printed on the board. Late arrivals also face a simple market effect: fewer cars, more tired passengers, and drivers who know the bus has stopped. Opening quotes of 200 to 300 MAD after midnight are common. If your flight lands late, our guide to landing in Marrakech at night explains what to expect.
What travellers really pay, and why
Most visitors pay more than the board. The reasons are ordinary. You have just landed, you carry no dirhams or only 200 MAD notes, you do not know the distance, and the first driver names a round figure in euros. A quote of "20 euros" for the medina is about double the posted day tariff. Many people accept it because the sum is small in absolute terms.
Other extras appear on arrival: a charge per suitcase, a higher price because "the riad is far inside", or a drop-off at the wrong gate followed by a porter who expects a tip. None of this is dangerous. It is simply tiring after a flight.
To be fair to drivers: many are correct, and some wait an hour or more at the airport for a single short fare. A small premium over the board is normal and nobody should argue over 10 dirhams.
How to pay the right fare
- Get dirhams first. Use an ATM in the arrivals hall and break a large note at a café or kiosk if you can. Our step-by-step guide to arriving at Marrakech airport shows where they are.
- Read the board. Find your zone and the day or night column.
- State the price yourself. Say the destination and the amount in dirhams, for the whole car, luggage included.
- Agree before loading. If the answer is no, move calmly to the next car. Refusing is normal.
- Name a precise drop-off. A gate or a hotel name, not just "medina".
- Pay the exact amount. Do not expect change from a 200 MAD note.
How a fixed-price transfer compares
A pre-booked private transfer removes the negotiation. The rate is fixed per vehicle and confirmed before you fly: €15 for a sedan (1-3 passengers), €20 for a minivan (4-6) and €35 for a minibus (7-14) to the medina, Gueliz or Hivernage. Luggage is included, the price is the same day and night, and waiting after a flight delay is free. You pay the driver in cash in euros, dirhams, pounds or dollars.
By day, a taxi at the true posted tariff costs a few euros less, and it is a sound choice if you have dirhams and enjoy a brief haggle. At night, with a family, or when you would rather walk out and find your name on a sign, the transfer usually costs the same or less than what is paid at the rank.
