Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) sits about 6 km from the medina and 5 km from Gueliz, so the drive into the city centre takes 12 to 15 minutes outside rush hour. You have three realistic ways to get from Marrakech airport to the city centre: a taxi from the rank, city bus 19, or a pre-booked private transfer at a fixed €15 per sedan. The right choice depends on your arrival time, your luggage and where exactly you sleep.

How far is Marrakech airport from the city centre?

Close. The terminal lies south-west of the old city, at the end of Avenue Guemassa. From the forecourt, the road runs past the Menara gardens and reaches the Koutoubia mosque in about 6 km. Gueliz and Hivernage, the modern districts with most of the hotels, are 5 km away.

"City centre" means two different places in Marrakech. The medina is the walled old town around Jemaa el-Fna, where the riads are. Gueliz is the new town built around Avenue Mohammed V. Both are short rides. The difference is the last 300 metres: cars reach hotel doors in Gueliz, but most medina lanes are closed to vehicles.

Taking a taxi from the rank

The taxi rank is on the forecourt, a short walk from the arrivals exit. Two kinds of taxi wait there. Petit taxis are small beige cars licensed for up to three passengers inside the city. Grand taxis are larger and take up to six.

Airport fares are regulated and displayed on a board at the rank. Read it before you talk to a driver. In practice, the price quoted to visitors is often above the board, more so late in the evening, and drivers rarely use the meter on airport runs. Agree the total for the car, including bags, before you get in, and carry small dirham notes because drivers seldom have change. Our separate guide explains what an airport taxi in Marrakech should cost and how to pay it.

A taxi is a fair choice if you travel light, land in daytime and are comfortable with a short negotiation.

Bus 19, the airport shuttle

Line 19 is the city bus that links the airport with the centre. It leaves from the stop on the forecourt outside the terminal. At the time of writing the single fare is around 30 MAD, paid in cash to the driver, and buses run roughly every 30 minutes from early morning until the evening. Timetables change, so check the sign at the stop.

The route passes Hivernage, stops close to Jemaa el-Fna and continues to Gueliz and the train station. It is the cheapest way in for a solo traveller. The limits are clear: no service for late-night flights, a wait if you have just missed one, little room for big suitcases, and a walk at the other end. If your riad is deep in the medina, that walk can take 15 minutes over cobbles.

Booking a private transfer

A private transfer is a car reserved for you alone. The driver tracks your flight, waits at the arrivals exit with your name on a sign, and takes you straight to your door or to the closest point a car can reach. The price is fixed per vehicle, not per person: €15 for a sedan (1-3 passengers), €20 for a minivan (4-6) and €35 for a minibus (7-14). Luggage, fuel and taxes are included, and the rate is the same day and night.

You pay the driver in cash on arrival, in euros, dirhams, pounds or dollars, so you do not need to find an ATM first. If your flight is late, the wait is free. See the details for a transfer from Marrakech airport to the medina or for Gueliz and Hivernage hotels.

For two or three people, the gap with a taxi is small or nil. The gain is certainty: a known price, a driver who has your riad's phone number, and no discussion at the kerb.

What about Uber, ride apps or walking?

Uber does not operate in Marrakech. Local ride apps exist, but at the time of writing pickups at the airport are unreliable, and the taxi rank has priority on the forecourt. Do not plan your arrival around an app.

Walking is not practical. The first kilometres follow a fast road with little shade, and summer afternoons pass 40 °C.

Which option suits your arrival?

  • Solo, daytime, backpack: bus 19 is cheap and simple.
  • Couple with cabin bags, hotel in Gueliz: taxi or transfer, the cost is close.
  • Riad in the medina: a transfer helps, because the driver coordinates the meeting point with your host. Read how riad drop-offs work in the medina.
  • Family or group of 4 or more: one minivan costs less than two petit taxis and keeps everyone together.
  • Landing after 22:00: the bus has stopped and taxi quotes rise. Our notes on arriving late at night in Marrakech cover this case.

You can reserve your airport pickup online in two minutes, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
