Can a Car Reach My Riad? How Drop-Offs Work in the Marrakech Medina
In most cases a car cannot reach the door of a riad. A transfer to a riad in Marrakech medina ends at the nearest gate, square or car park, and you finish on foot, usually 2 to 10 minutes through lanes too narrow for vehicles. The drive from Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is 6 km and about 15 minutes. What decides a smooth arrival is the meeting point agreed with your riad.
Why cars cannot drive to most riads
The medina of Marrakech is a walled city laid out centuries before the car. Its main arteries are a few metres wide. The side lanes, called derbs, are often dead ends barely broader than a handcart. Jemaa el-Fna and the souks north of it are pedestrian. A handful of streets inside the walls do take traffic, such as the road from Bab Doukkala towards Dar el Bacha or parts of the Kasbah, and access can be restricted at busy hours.
A riad is a courtyard house, and almost all of them stand on a derb. This is why they are quiet. It also means that the last stretch is always a walk, whether you arrive by taxi, bus or private car.
Where does the car stop? Drop-off points by district
Drivers aim for the entry point closest to your riad, not for "the medina" in general. The usual ones are below. Walking times are typical ranges and depend on the exact address.
| Area of the medina | Usual drop-off point | Typical walk |
|---|---|---|
| Jemaa el-Fna, Riad Zitoun, Kennaria | Edge of the square near the Koutoubia, or Place des Ferblantiers | 3 to 10 min |
| Mouassine, Laksour | Bab Laksour | 3 to 8 min |
| Dar el Bacha, Bab Doukkala | Bab Doukkala or the Dar el Bacha road | 2 to 8 min |
| Kasbah, Mellah, Badi Palace | Bab Agnaou, Bab Ksiba or Place des Ferblantiers | 1 to 5 min |
| Northern medina, Sidi Bel Abbès | Bab Taghzout or Bab el Khemis | 3 to 10 min |
| Eastern medina | Bab Aylen or Bab Debbagh | 5 to 10 min |
Ask your riad one question before you travel: "Which gate or car park should my driver use?" The answer is worth more than the street address, which map apps often place a lane or two off.
How the handover with your riad works
Good riads do this every day. The usual sequence is simple.
- You give the riad your flight number and arrival time, and they name a meeting point.
- You pass that meeting point and the riad's phone number to your driver, or note them in the booking.
- The driver calls the riad when you leave the airport, about 15 minutes before arrival.
- A member of staff waits at the drop-off and walks you to the door.
With a pre-booked transfer, the driver makes that call for you, in Arabic or French, and stays with you until the riad's staff arrive. A private transfer from Marrakech airport to the medina costs a fixed €15 for a sedan (1-3 passengers), €20 for a minivan (4-6) and €35 for a minibus (7-14), day and night. With a taxi from the rank you make the arrangements yourself, so have mobile data or a working phone: the Marrakech airport arrival walkthrough explains where to buy a SIM.
Luggage: porters, handcarts and what to pack
Wheeled suitcases struggle on cobbles and steps. At most gates you will find porters with a handcart, known locally as a carrossa. They load the bags and follow you to the riad. A typical payment is 20 to 50 MAD depending on distance and the number of bags. Agree the price before the bags are loaded and pay in small notes.
Many riads send their own porter, sometimes free of charge, so ask. If you can choose, pack one medium case per person and avoid oversized hard shells. Pushchairs work on the main lanes, less well on the derbs.
One thing to know: young men near the gates may offer to "show the way" and then ask for money. If your riad is sending someone, wait for that person at the agreed spot and decline other offers politely.
Arriving late at night or with children
After dark the lanes are poorly lit and many look alike. There are fewer porters and shops are shuttered, so landmarks disappear. Do not try to find a riad alone on a first night. Confirm that someone will meet you at the gate, whatever the hour. Our advice on reaching your hotel after a late landing in Marrakech goes into detail.
With small children, limited mobility or a lot of luggage, pick a riad a short walk from a gate. Bab Doukkala, Bab Laksour and the Kasbah have many addresses within two or three minutes of a road. If step-free door-to-door access matters most, the comparison of staying in the Palmeraie or in the medina will help you decide.
Leaving the riad for your flight
Departure runs in reverse. The driver cannot collect you at the door, so the pickup is at the same gate or car park. Ask the riad to book a porter and to walk you out 10 minutes before the pickup time. The driver waits 15 minutes at no charge. From the medina gates to the terminal takes about 15 minutes, a little longer around Bab Doukkala and the Koutoubia at rush hour.
