Palmeraie or medina: where to stay in Marrakech and how transfers differ
Choosing Palmeraie or medina in Marrakech comes down to walking versus space. The medina is 6 km and about 15 minutes from Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) and puts the souks and Jemaa el-Fna outside your door, but cars cannot reach most riads. The Palmeraie is 18 km and about 30 minutes from the airport, with resorts, pools and quiet, and every trip into town needs a vehicle. A private airport transfer costs €15 per sedan to the medina and €22 to the Palmeraie.

What is staying in the medina like?
The medina is the walled old city, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985. Staying here means a riad: a traditional house built around a courtyard, usually with five to ten rooms, a roof terrace and breakfast cooked in the house. You step out into the lanes and reach the souks, the Bahia Palace, the Ben Youssef Madrasa and Jemaa el-Fna on foot. In the evening you walk home from dinner.
The trade-offs are real. Rooms are smaller than in a resort and pools, where they exist, are plunge pools. The lanes are busy with scooters and handcarts, and finding the door the first time takes patience. Travellers with reduced mobility or a pushchair should ask the riad how many steps there are and how far the nearest car access is.
How do transfers work in the medina?
The drive from the terminal takes about 15 minutes. The car then stops at the closest gate or small square that vehicles can reach, such as Bab Doukkala, Bab Laksour or the car park near the Koutoubia, and you finish on foot. Most riads send someone to meet you, and porters with handcarts carry luggage for a small fee. Tell the driver the riad's name and phone number, not only the street: lane names are little use to a satnav. The full picture is in our guide to car access and drop-offs for medina riads, and prices are on the page for a private transfer from Marrakech Airport to the medina.
What is staying in the Palmeraie like?
The Palmeraie is a large palm grove on the north-east side of Marrakech, traditionally dated to the Almoravid period nearly a thousand years ago. Today it holds resort hotels, private villas and golf courses on big plots separated by dirt roads and palms. You get space: gardens, full-size pools, kids' clubs, spas and views of the Atlas on clear days. In summer, when the medina holds the heat, a pool and shade make a clear difference.
The cost is distance. There is very little to walk to outside your hotel gate, no evening street life and few independent restaurants nearby. Each visit to the old city is a planned trip of 20 to 30 minutes each way. Some hotels run a shuttle to the centre at set times, so check the schedule and whether it is free before you book. Taxis do not cruise the Palmeraie: the hotel calls one, and you agree the fare first.
How do transfers work in the Palmeraie?
From the airport the car skirts the city on the ring road and reaches the Palmeraie in about 30 minutes, a little longer between 17:00 and 19:30. The driver takes you to the hotel entrance and luggage is unloaded at reception. Signage inside the grove is poor and several properties have similar names, so give the exact hotel name when you book. Fares for every vehicle size are on the page for a private transfer from Marrakech Airport to the Palmeraie.
Is there a middle option?
Yes: Gueliz and Hivernage, the modern districts just west of the medina. They are 5 km and about 12 minutes from the airport, cars reach every door, hotels have proper pools, and Jemaa el-Fna is a 20 to 30 minute walk or a short taxi ride. It lacks the character of a riad and the space of a resort, but it is the easiest area for late arrivals and short business trips.
Another common plan is to split the stay: three nights in a medina riad for the sights, then two or three in the Palmeraie to rest. A single car moves you between the two in about 25 minutes, and a hotel-to-hotel transfer within Marrakech is easy to arrange on the day you switch.
Which area should you choose?
- Two or three nights, first visit: the medina. You will spend your time on foot and lose nothing to commuting.
- A week with children: the Palmeraie, or a split stay. Children tire of the lanes faster than adults.
- July or August: the Palmeraie or Hivernage, for a full-size pool.
- Landing after 23:00: either works, but arrange to be met in the medina. See our advice on arriving late at night in Marrakech.
- Groups of 7 or more: a Palmeraie villa and a minibus are simpler than several small riad rooms and a walk with luggage.
For departure day, add the 15 minutes of extra driving from the Palmeraie, or the walk to the gate from a riad. Our guide to when to leave for Marrakech airport gives leave-by times for both. All city routes and fares are listed in the Marrakech airport transfers section.
