To get to the Agafay desert from Marrakech you need a car with a driver, a hire car or a camp shuttle: the camps lie about 35 km south-west of the city, roughly 50 minutes by road, and no public bus serves them. The first 25 to 30 km are tarmac and the last stretch is an unpaved track. A private transfer from Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) or any hotel costs €40 per sedan, €50 per minivan and €75 per minibus, one way.

Where is the Agafay desert and what kind of desert is it?

Agafay is a stony plateau of pale, bare hills between Marrakech and the foothills of the High Atlas, near the reservoir of Lalla Takerkoust. It is a rock desert, not a sand sea. You will not find tall dunes here: those are at Merzouga, 560 km and about 9 hours from Marrakech. What Agafay offers is open space, Atlas views and a night under canvas within an hour of the city, which is why it works for short stays.

The airport sits on the south-west edge of Marrakech, on the same side as Agafay. If you land in the afternoon you can go directly from arrivals to your camp without crossing the city.

How far is Agafay from Marrakech, and what is the road like?

Count 35 km and about 50 minutes from the airport, and a little longer from the medina or the Palmeraie because you first cross town. The route follows the road towards Lalla Takerkoust and Amizmiz through olive groves and villages, then leaves the tarmac. From the turn-off, each camp has its own track of anything from 1 to 10 km.

These tracks are the real difficulty. They are stony, unsigned and unlit, and they fork often. In dry weather an ordinary car driven slowly reaches most camps. After rain, some sections turn to mud and a few camps become reachable by 4x4 only, in which case the camp normally meets guests at the roadside with its own vehicle. Ask your camp which applies and request a location pin, not just a name: several camps have similar names.

Camp shuttles and tour pickups

If you are going for a sunset dinner or a half-day activity, the simplest route is often the transport sold with the package. A minibus collects guests from a meeting point or from hotels in the afternoon and brings everyone back after dinner. It is economical for one or two people. The limits are the schedule and the detours: you leave when the group leaves, and riads inside the medina are not served at the door.

Taxi

Small city taxis do not normally leave the urban area, so this is a job for a grand taxi. Agree the fare for the whole car before setting off, and settle whether it includes waiting or a second trip to bring you back. There is no taxi rank in the desert and mobile coverage is patchy on parts of the plateau. A driver who does not know your camp may also stop where the tarmac ends.

Hire car

Driving yourself makes sense if you already have a car for a longer trip. Go in daylight, keep your speed low on the track and download the map before you leave. Arriving after sunset is where most self-drivers get into difficulty, because there are no lights or signs to follow.

Private transfer

A booked car suits anyone staying the night, travelling with luggage or children, or coming directly from a flight. The price is per vehicle, the same day and night, and the return costs the same as the outward trip. Child seats are free on request, and a short stop on the way, for water or a cash machine, costs nothing extra. Send the camp's location pin when you book so the driver knows the correct track. See the page for a private transfer from Marrakech Airport to the Agafay desert.

When is the best time to go, and when should you set off?

Agafay is at its best in the last two hours of daylight, when the hills turn gold and the Atlas shows on the horizon. Aim to arrive at least 90 minutes before sunset. That means leaving Marrakech in mid afternoon in winter and around 17:00 to 18:00 in summer.

Seasons matter. In July and August, afternoon temperatures can pass 40°C and there is no natural shade. From December to February the days are mild but nights can drop close to freezing, so pack a warm layer even for a dinner visit. Spring and autumn are the comfortable months.

If your flight lands in the evening, think twice about going directly to camp. Check-in after dark on an unlit track is slow, and a first night in town is often easier. Our article on late night arrivals in Marrakech covers that case.

Getting back to Marrakech or to the airport

Book your return at the same time as the outward trip. From a camp to the terminal is 35 km and about 50 minutes, so for an international flight leave around 4 hours before take-off. The reasoning is set out in our guide to how early to arrive at Marrakech airport.

Many travellers pair one night in Agafay with a few nights in town. If you have not picked a base yet, compare the two main areas in Palmeraie or medina: where to stay. When your dates are fixed, you can book your Agafay transfer online and pay the driver in cash on the day.
