Marrakech to Merzouga: how long the drive takes and where to stop
The Marrakech to Merzouga drive is 560 km and takes about 9 hours of pure driving, closer to 11 or 12 once you add lunch and photo stops. The road climbs the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m), then runs east on the N10 through Ouarzazate, the Dadès valley and Tinghir to the Erg Chebbi dunes. A private transfer on this route costs €300 per sedan, €340 per minivan and €450 per minibus, one way.
How long does the Marrakech to Merzouga drive take?
Plan on 9 hours without stops. Nobody does it without stops. The first 195 km to Ouarzazate take about 4 hours because the N9 is a mountain road: bends, trucks and an average speed well under 60 km/h. After Ouarzazate the N10 is flatter and faster, but it passes through a chain of towns with speed limits and police checks.
There is no motorway on any part of this route and no train. Leave Marrakech by 07:00 if you want to reach Merzouga before dark in winter, when the sun sets at around 18:00. Arriving after dark matters here: most desert camps move guests into the dunes by camel or 4x4 before sunset.

Where to stop between Marrakech and Merzouga
Before Ouarzazate
Stop at the summit of the pass for ten minutes and a photo. If you have a full spare hour, Aït Ben Haddou sits 9 km off the N9 shortly before Ouarzazate. On a one-day run to Merzouga, look at the ksar from the viewpoint on the east bank rather than climbing it.
Ouarzazate to Tinghir
Ouarzazate is the natural lunch stop and the last place with a wide choice of cash machines. Skoura, 40 km further, has a large palm grove and the Amridil kasbah close to the road. In late April and early May the fields around Kalaat M'Gouna are in bloom for the rose harvest.
Todra gorge
From Tinghir a side road runs 15 km north to the Todra gorge, where the rock walls rise to around 300 m above a narrow river bed. It adds about an hour including the walk through the narrowest section. It is the single best detour on the route if you only choose one.
The last stretch
After Tinejdad the land flattens into stony desert. Fill the tank in Erfoud or Rissani. From Rissani it is 35 km of straight road to Merzouga, and the dunes appear on your left well before you arrive.
Should you do it in one day or two?
One day works if your goal is simply to reach the dunes: leave early, stop three times, arrive for sunset in spring or autumn. It is a long day for children and for anyone prone to car sickness.
Two days is the better trip. Sleep in Ouarzazate, Skoura or the Dadès valley, then visit the Todra gorge the next morning and reach Merzouga by mid-afternoon. With us you can book the first leg as a private transfer from Marrakech to Ouarzazate (195 km, 4 h, €110 per sedan) and ask us on WhatsApp about the onward day.
Bus, group tour or private driver
Bus. Supratours runs one direct coach a day to Merzouga. At the time of writing it leaves Marrakech in the morning at around 08:30 and arrives roughly 12 hours later, for around 260 to 280 MAD per seat. It is cheap and reliable. It does not stop for sights, and other coach services end in Rissani, 35 km short of the dunes, where you need a taxi.
Group tour. Three-day shared minibus tours from Marrakech are the most common way to see Merzouga. The price per person is low and the camp is included. You follow a fixed timetable, share the vehicle with up to 16 people, and the return day is 9 to 10 hours on the road.
Rental car. The roads are paved and well signed. Driving the pass and then five more hours is tiring for a single driver, and night driving outside towns is best avoided because of unlit vehicles and animals.
Private driver. A private transfer from Marrakech to Merzouga is priced per vehicle, so it makes most sense for three or more people, for families, or when your camp or onward flight sets the timetable. Short stops on the way are free, and you choose them. You pay the driver on arrival, in cash. For one or two travellers on a tight budget, the bus is the honest recommendation.
Heading north after the desert? The road from Merzouga to Fes is a different day entirely, and our Marrakech to Fes route guide helps you plan the triangle. All long-distance prices are listed under intercity transfers from Marrakech.
When to go and what to keep in the car
October to April is the comfortable season. In July and August afternoon temperatures in Merzouga regularly pass 40°C. In winter the pass can close for a few hours after snow, usually between December and February, so check conditions on the morning you leave.
Keep water, a layer for the pass, sunglasses and small dirham notes for cafés and toilets. Mobile coverage is good in towns and patchy in between.
