The drive over the Tizi n'Tichka pass

The route follows the N9 south-east from Marrakech, across the Haouz plain and up into the High Atlas. The road climbs through Aït Ourir and Taddert to the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m), often cited as the highest major road pass in Morocco, then drops through drier, redder country to Ouarzazate at about 1,150 m. The distance is 195 km. Allow about 4 hours, because most of it is mountain road with long series of bends. There is no train and no motorway on this side of the Atlas. In winter, snow can close the pass for a few hours, so confirm with us the day before if you travel between December and February. Our guide to the Tizi n'Tichka road describes each section.

Pickup in Marrakech, drop-off in Ouarzazate

At Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) your driver waits at the arrivals exit with a name sign. The same price applies from any hotel or riad in Marrakech. Ouarzazate has no closed medina: the car reaches the door of hotels along Avenue Mohammed V, in the Taourirt Kasbah district and in the hotel zone, as well as Ouarzazate Airport (OZZ). For addresses outside town, such as the Fint oasis or Skoura, tell us when you book and we confirm the price first.

Stops on the way and return timing

Short stops are free. The usual ones are tea at Taddert, photos at the summit and a viewpoint on the southern descent. If you are prone to travel sickness, take the front seat and ask the driver to pause more often. For a flight out of Marrakech, leave Ouarzazate at least 7 hours before departure. Many travellers carry on east the next day with a private transfer to Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes.
