Marrakech to Taghazout is 265 km and takes about 3 h 20 by car: motorway to Agadir, then 20 km of coast road north. There is no train and no direct public coach to the village, so the choice is a bus to Agadir plus a taxi, a shared surf shuttle, or a private transfer at a fixed €110 per sedan, €130 per minivan or €185 per minibus. With surfboards, the vehicle matters more than the price.

How far is Marrakech to Taghazout and what is the road like?

The drive is simple. You leave Marrakech on the A3 toll motorway heading south-west, pass Chichaoua and Imintanoute, then cross the western end of the High Atlas on a long, sweeping descent towards the Souss plain. Service areas with fuel, toilets and cafés come up roughly every 50 to 60 km.

The motorway ends at Agadir. From there the N1 follows the coast north through Aourir, known as Banana Village, and Tamraght, before reaching Taghazout about 20 km later. This last section is slower: roundabouts, speed bumps and, in summer, beach traffic. Expect 3 h 20 door to door in normal conditions, a little more on Sunday evenings.

Coach to Agadir, then taxi

CTM and Supratours run frequent coaches from Marrakech to Agadir. The ride typically takes 3 h to 3 h 30 and fares are usually in the range of 100 to 150 MAD at the time of writing. From the Agadir bus station you still need a taxi or a local bus for the remaining 20 km or so, which adds 30 to 45 minutes. It is the cheapest way to travel and works well with a backpack. For the full picture on this leg, see our guide to travelling from Marrakech to Agadir by road.

Shared surf shuttle

Several operators sell seats on scheduled minibuses between Marrakech and the Taghazout area, at prices from around €20 per seat at the time of writing. Good value for one or two people. Departures are fixed, pickup points are central rather than at your door, and the bus waits for nobody whose flight is late.

Rental car

Useful if you plan to chase waves along the coast for a week. Less useful if you will stay in one surf camp that already runs daily trips to the breaks.

Private transfer

A private transfer from Marrakech to Taghazout leaves when you are ready, from the airport arrivals exit or from your riad, and drops you at your surf house. The price is per vehicle and includes tolls, fuel and luggage. It makes sense for two or more people sharing, for late landings, and whenever boards are involved.

Travelling with surfboards

Boards change the maths. Coaches carry them in the hold only when space allows, a small luggage fee is common, and the decision is made at the station on the day. A board that does not fit is your problem to solve.

With a private vehicle, tell us three things when you book: how many boards, the length of the longest one, and how many passengers. As a rule of thumb:

  • Sedan (1-3 passengers): fine for suitcases and wetsuits, not for boards. Choose it if you are renting equipment in Taghazout.
  • Minivan (4-6 passengers): the standard choice for surfers. Shortboards in bags travel inside. With longboards, count on fewer passenger seats.
  • Minibus (7-14 passengers): for surf groups and camps with a full quiver.

Pack every board in a padded bag, fins off, with a towel around the nose and tail. Send a photo of the bags on WhatsApp if you are unsure: it takes one message to confirm the right vehicle. If your board travelled as oversized baggage, collect it from the oversized belt before you walk out: the driver waits at the arrivals exit with a name sign, and waiting after a delayed flight is free.

Fly into Marrakech or Agadir?

Agadir Al Massira Airport (AGA) is much closer: 45 km and about 50 minutes from Taghazout, with a transfer from Agadir Airport to Taghazout at €35 per sedan. If the fare and the schedule suit you, fly there.

Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) usually has more routes and more daily flights, and many surfers combine a few days in the city with a week on the coast. In that case the 265 km are part of the plan. Another common loop adds Essaouira for wind and old ramparts before continuing south on the coast road: our comparison of ways to get from Marrakech to Essaouira covers the first leg.

When to go and where you will be dropped

The main surf season runs from about October to April, when Atlantic swells reach the point breaks north of the village: Anchor Point, Killer Point and others. Summer waves are smaller and suit beginners. Winter evenings are cool, so keep a jumper in your hand luggage for the drive.

Taghazout itself is a small village with narrow lanes, and many surf houses in Taghazout and Tamraght sit on steep streets. The driver gets as close as the road allows. Send your camp's location pin in advance. For the return to Marrakech, leave Taghazout about 6 h 30 before your flight departs.
