Private transfer or taxi in Morocco: what is the difference?
Private transfer vs taxi in Morocco comes down to three things: who sets the price, how many people fit, and how far the car may go. A petit taxi is metered, takes 3 passengers at most and stays inside one city. A grand taxi links towns and is usually shared. A private transfer is booked ahead for your party only, at a fixed price per vehicle, for example €15 for a sedan from Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) to the medina.
The three services you will meet on the road
Morocco has two kinds of licensed taxi and one separate category of pre-booked transport with a driver. They do not compete for the same job. Knowing which is which saves you most of the arguments travellers report at the kerb.
Petit taxi
A small car painted in the city colour: ochre in Marrakech, red in Casablanca, blue in Rabat. It carries a maximum of 3 passengers and is not allowed to leave the city limits. The fare is meant to run on the meter. In practice the meter is not always switched on in tourist areas, so ask for it before you get in or agree the fare first. A night rate, typically around 50% more, applies in the evening. Drivers may pick up other passengers going the same way.
Grand taxi
A larger car or van that works between towns and on fixed lines out of a city. It leaves from a rank when its seats are full, and you pay per seat. You can also hire the whole vehicle by paying for every seat, at a price you negotiate with the driver. Grand taxis also serve the airports, where fares are posted on a board by destination. The posted figure and the one first quoted do not always match.
Private transfer
A car, minivan or minibus with a driver, reserved in advance for a set pickup time and place. The price is fixed per vehicle before you travel, not per person and not per kilometre. Nobody else shares the car. The driver knows your flight number and your address before you land.
Private transfer vs taxi in Morocco: side by side

| Price | Meter, or agreed on the spot | Per seat, or negotiated for the car | Fixed per vehicle, known when you book |
| Passengers | 3 maximum | Typically up to 6, shared | 1-3 sedan, 4-6 minivan, 7-14 minibus |
| Range | Inside one city | Between towns, airports | Any address, any distance |

| Night | Higher night rate | Fewer departures, price rises | Same price day and night |

When a taxi is the better choice
For short hops inside a city, take a petit taxi. Gueliz to the Majorelle Garden, the train station to Bab Doukkala, a restaurant in Hivernage and back: these are rides of a few minutes that typically cost between 10 and 30 dirhams by day on the meter. No booking is needed and there is always one passing. A pre-booked car makes no sense for this.
A shared grand taxi is the cheapest way to reach a nearby town if you travel light, speak a little French or Arabic and do not mind waiting for the car to fill. It is how most Moroccans travel between small towns, and it works.
Ride apps exist in the larger cities too, with their own limits. They are covered in our guide to Uber and ride-hailing apps in Morocco.
When a private transfer makes more sense
The balance changes as soon as you add luggage, distance, children or a late flight.
- Airport arrivals. You land tired, with bags and no dirhams yet. The driver waits at the arrivals exit with a name sign, and his name and number reach you on WhatsApp before pickup. The transfer from Marrakech airport to the medina covers 6 km in about 15 minutes for €15 in a sedan or €20 in a minivan.
- Four people or more. A petit taxi takes three. A family of four needs two taxis or one minivan. For 7-14 people, see how a minibus with driver works for groups.
- Long distances. There is no train to Essaouira, Agadir, Ouarzazate or Merzouga. A private car from Marrakech to Essaouira takes 2 h 45 over 190 km and costs €75 per sedan, tolls and fuel included. You leave from your riad door, not from a rank across town, and short stops on the way are free.
- Delayed or night flights. The flight is tracked and waiting after a delay is free. The price at 02:00 is the price at 14:00.
- Children. Taxis do not carry child seats. A transfer can have one fitted, free on request.
What "fixed price" really covers
With a taxi, the cost depends on the meter, the hour, the bags and sometimes the mood. With a pre-booked transfer the figure is settled in writing. On our routes it includes tolls, fuel, taxes and luggage, and the return costs the same as the outbound trip. You pay the driver on arrival in cash, in euros, dirhams, pounds or US dollars, with no prepayment. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
A tip is never part of that price. If you wonder what is customary, read our note on how much to tip drivers in Morocco.
All routes are listed with their rates on the transfer prices page, and you can reserve a car with driver in a couple of minutes.
