Yes, there is Uber in Marrakech again. Uber left Morocco in 2018 and returned in November 2025, starting in Casablanca and Marrakech, with cars supplied by licensed tourist transport companies and not by private drivers. Other apps such as inDrive are widely used but work without a transport licence, so coverage, prices and airport pickups are less predictable than at home.

Is there Uber in Marrakech today?

At the time of writing, yes. Uber relaunched in Morocco in late 2025 after a seven-year absence. The first two cities were Casablanca and Marrakech, and reports since then mention a gradual extension to other large cities. Open the app when you land to see what it offers that day.

The service is not the Uber you use in London or Madrid. Morocco has no legal category for private individuals driving paying passengers. Uber therefore works only with companies that already hold a tourist transport licence. The launch offered two products: a standard car for up to 4 passengers and a larger one for up to 6.

The practical result is a smaller fleet. Expect longer waits than in Europe, fewer cars late at night and thin coverage outside the central districts. Prices are set by the app and can rise at busy times.

Which other ride apps work in Morocco?

Several apps are active in the big cities. Their legal position differs, and that matters more than the brand.

  • inDrive: the most used app in Marrakech, Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier, Agadir and Fes. You propose a fare and drivers accept or counter. Drivers are mostly private individuals in their own cars.
  • Careem, Yango and Heetch: present in some cities, mainly Casablanca and Rabat, with patchy coverage elsewhere. Availability changes often.
  • Taxi-hailing features: some apps can call a licensed petit taxi. This is the same metered taxi, booked from your phone.

Outside the six or seven largest cities, do not count on any app. In Essaouira, Ouarzazate, Imlil or Merzouga you will use local taxis or a pre-booked driver.

Are ride apps legal in Morocco?

Moroccan transport law recognises taxis and licensed tourist transport. It does not yet recognise private ride-hailing drivers. Uber's current model sits inside the law because its partner vehicles are licensed. Apps that rely on private drivers do not, and the transport ministry was reported in late 2025 to have turned down their licensing requests. A legal framework has been discussed for years and may change this.

For a passenger, the risks are practical and not criminal. Fines aimed at passengers are rare. What you may meet instead:

  • A driver who asks you to sit in the front and say you are a friend.
  • A pickup point a few streets away from a taxi rank, to avoid a dispute with taxi drivers.
  • Limited recourse and unclear insurance cover if something goes wrong in an unlicensed car.

None of this makes the apps unusable. Many residents use them every day. You should simply know what you are booking.

Can you use a ride app from Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK)?

This is where apps are weakest. The airport forecourt is taxi territory, and drivers of unlicensed apps often refuse airport jobs or ask you to walk out to the main road with your luggage. After a flight, with bags and perhaps children, that is a poor start. You also need mobile data the moment you leave the terminal, so sort out your connection first with our guide to buying a SIM card or eSIM at the airport.

The reliable options from arrivals are the official taxi rank and a pre-booked car. A private transfer from Marrakech Airport to the medina covers 6 km in about 15 minutes for €15 per sedan, with the driver waiting at the arrivals exit holding a name sign. The transfer to Gueliz and Hivernage costs the same. Both prices are fixed, day and night.

For a ride from Gueliz to the Majorelle Garden, an app or a petit taxi is fine. For the airport, a late arrival, a group of more than three, or a trip to another city, book ahead. The difference between the two licensed options is explained in private transfer or taxi in Morocco.

Practical tips for using ride apps in Morocco

  • Carry cash. Many app rides are paid in dirhams to the driver, even when a card is saved. See cash, cards and currency on arrival.
  • Check the plate. Match the number plate and the driver's photo before you get in.
  • Pin a real address. Cars cannot enter most of the medina. Set your pickup at a gate such as Bab Doukkala or Bab Laksour, not at your riad door.
  • Allow margin. Do not rely on an app for a ride to a flight. A cancelled booking at 5 am leaves you with few alternatives.
  • Agree the fare first. On fare-offer apps, confirm the amount in the chat before the car moves.

For anything that has to run on time, compare the fixed fares on our list of private transfer routes and prices, then reserve your car online. You pay the driver on arrival, in cash, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.

Key takeaways

  • Uber returned to Morocco in November 2025, starting in Casablanca and Marrakech, using licensed tourist transport vehicles.
  • inDrive is the most used ride app in Moroccan cities, but its private drivers are not licensed under current transport law.
  • Ride apps are unreliable for pickups at Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK): use the taxi rank or a pre-booked car.
  • A private transfer from Marrakech Airport to the medina costs €15 per sedan for 6 km and about 15 minutes.
  • Outside the largest cities, no ride app offers dependable coverage.
