Driving Times in Morocco: A Realistic Distance Chart Between Cities
Driving times in Morocco depend on the road, not the distance. On motorways you average about 90 km/h door to door: Marrakech to Casablanca is 240 km in 2 h 40. On mountain roads you average about 50 km/h: Marrakech to Ouarzazate is only 195 km but takes 4 h. Plan with the chart below, not with kilometres alone.
Driving times in Morocco from Marrakech: the chart
These are the distances and durations we use to schedule our own drivers. They are measured from Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK), assume normal traffic and do not include long stops. A Marrakech hotel or riad as the starting point changes them by a few minutes at most.
| From Marrakech to | Distance | Driving time | Road type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gueliz and Hivernage | 5 km | 12 min | City |
| Marrakech Medina | 6 km | 15 min | City |
| Palmeraie | 18 km | 30 min | City and ring road |
| Agafay Desert | 35 km | 50 min | Road, then track |
| Ourika Valley | 60 km | 1 h 15 | Valley road |
| Imlil | 70 km | 1 h 30 | Mountain road |
| Ouzoud Falls | 160 km | 2 h 45 | National and hill roads |
| Aït Ben Haddou | 180 km | 3 h 30 | Mountain pass |
| Essaouira | 190 km | 2 h 45 | National road |
| Ouarzazate | 195 km | 4 h | Mountain pass |
| Casablanca | 240 km | 2 h 40 | Motorway |
| Agadir | 250 km | 3 h | Motorway |
| Taghazout | 265 km | 3 h 20 | Motorway, then coast road |
| Rabat | 325 km | 3 h 30 | Motorway |
| Fes | 530 km | 5 h 30 | Motorway |
| Merzouga | 560 km | 9 h | Mountain pass and desert roads |
Fixed prices for each of these journeys are on our private transfer routes and prices page.
Distances from other Moroccan airports
If you land somewhere other than Marrakech, these four legs cover the most common first journeys.
| Route | Distance | Driving time |
|---|---|---|
| Casablanca Airport (CMN) to Marrakech | 220 km | 2 h 30 |
| Agadir Airport (AGA) to Taghazout | 45 km | 50 min |
| Fes Airport (FEZ) to Fes Medina | 15 km | 25 min |
| Tangier Airport (TNG) to Chefchaouen | 125 km | 2 h 15 |
Casablanca Airport sits south of the city, on the Marrakech side. That is why the transfer from Casablanca Airport to Marrakech is 20 km shorter than the drive from Marrakech to central Casablanca.
Why the same distance takes different times
Motorways: fast and predictable
Toll motorways link Marrakech with Agadir, Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier and Fes. The limit is 120 km/h, traffic is light outside the Casablanca area, and service stations appear at regular intervals. The drive from Marrakech to Casablanca and the motorway run to Agadir rarely vary by more than 15 minutes. Marrakech to Fes follows the motorway through Casablanca, Rabat and Meknes: long at 530 km, but steady.
National roads: slower than they look
The road to Essaouira via Chichaoua has no motorway. You pass through towns, share the road with lorries and slow down for roundabouts and speed checks. Count 2 h 45 for 190 km, an average under 70 km/h.
Mountain passes: the map lies
The N9 to Ouarzazate crosses the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m). The road has been widened in many sections, but it still climbs through hairpins behind slow trucks. Expect 4 h for 195 km. The Marrakech to Ouarzazate transfer is a half-day journey, and Imlil, at 1,740 m, needs 1 h 30 for only 70 km.
What slows a journey down in Morocco
- Winter weather. Snow can close the Tizi n'Tichka for a few hours between December and March. Morning fog is common on the plains around Casablanca and Settat.
- Night driving. Unlit rural roads, pedestrians, animals and carts make night speeds lower outside the motorways.
- City exits. Leaving Casablanca or Marrakech at rush hour can add 20 to 30 minutes.
- Speed checks. Radar controls are frequent at the entrance to towns, where the limit drops to 60 km/h.
- Ramadan. Roads are busy just before sunset, then empty for an hour.
- Stops. A coffee break adds 15 to 20 minutes, lunch about an hour. Photo stops on the Tichka add up quickly.
How to plan long drives
Three rules work for most itineraries.
- Under 3 h 30: fine as a single transfer, at any time of day. This covers Essaouira, Agadir, Casablanca, Rabat and all the Atlas day trips.
- 4 h to 6 h: leave in the morning and plan one proper break. Ouarzazate and Fes fall here.
- Over 8 h: split it if you can. The Marrakech to Merzouga drive takes 9 h at the wheel. Many travellers stop overnight around Ouarzazate or the Dades valley. Done in one day, it means leaving by 7 am to arrive before dark.
For a return flight, add your driving time to the airport check-in margin and then add a buffer: 30 minutes on motorway routes, an hour on mountain routes.
Travelling with young children changes the maths. Plan a stop every two hours and ask for seats in advance, as explained in our guide to child car seats on Moroccan transfers. Larger parties should read when a minibus with driver makes sense, because loading 12 people and their bags adds time at each end.
Self-drive or a driver for long distances?
Hire cars are easy to find and the motorways are simple to drive. The harder parts are the city exits, the mountain overtakes and the last kilometre: parking near a medina, where cars cannot enter. Buses and trains are cheaper and serve the main cities, but there is no train to Essaouira, Agadir, Ouarzazate or Merzouga.
A car with driver costs more than a bus ticket and less than most people expect once three or four travellers share it. The price is fixed per vehicle, tolls and fuel included, and short stops on the way are free. Our comparison of a private transfer and a taxi in Morocco explains the difference. Key takeaways
- Marrakech to Casablanca is 240 km and takes 2 h 40 by motorway, an average of about 90 km/h.

- Marrakech to Fes is 530 km in 5 h 30 by motorway. Marrakech to Merzouga is 560 km in 9 h.
- Marrakech to Essaouira is 190 km in 2 h 45 on a national road with no motorway.
- Add a buffer of 30 minutes on motorway routes and an hour on mountain routes before a flight.
